Superannuation member data modelling & data warehouse design

Designing an enterprise data platform

1886 partnered with this Australian-based superannuation fund (with 600k members) to design an industry standard, Member-centric data model to service executive dashboards, management reporting, performance monitoring against KPIs, and for strategic decision making. This was driven by the desire to modernise their member data and performance reporting capabilities, decommission the legacy Member data warehouse architecture and develop a new cloud native Member data platform on Azure.

THE CHALLENGE
Prior to 1886 commencing work with the fund, their Member data, reporting and analytics capability maturity was low with a lack of consistent, standard Member data sets and reports that end users could easily access. After the decision was made to modernise their Member data and reporting solutions, there was a clear business need to provide the fund with a robust, extensible Member data model that supported executive and performance dashboards, management reporting, end user self-service data analysis, and also meet industry standards.
THE PROJECT
The client commenced a Member data program to enable their Member growth strategy, focusing on improving Member retention and acquisition. The objective of the Member data program was to deliver data standardisation and develop Member data domain models and data marts on a new enterprise platform, with improved analytics and reporting solutions. This new data capability would enable greater Member and Market insights, drive more effective Member engagement initiatives and communications, and improve performance monitoring on the business' strategic KPIs

1886 APPROACH

1886 successfully partnered with the client and was able to apply our expertise across multiple disciplines and business units in order to design and build a new Member data platform that integrated with the wider business. This involved:
Defining guiding design principles across staging, presentation, semantic and reporting layers

OUTCOMES

While the Member data model to support the initial requirements was narrow in scope, using our hands on industry experience and knowledge, 1886 was able to expand on the data model through the identification and development of new business requirements that the client had not previously considered. This resulted in a Member data model 2-3 times the size of the scope of the initial model. This led to the successful replacement and decommission of the client’s legacy Member data solution.

1886’s Member data model and architectural approach was selected as the preferred solution design to service the ongoing Member data, reporting and analytics needs for the new merged Fund that now serves 2M+ members
